Just in time for Christmas business, Microsoft is revising its hardware palette and adding two new surface books to assortment. The well-known surface book with 13.5-inch screen is joined by a larger version with 15-inch display from mid-November. It is positioned as an alternative to Apple and its MacBook Pro with 13-and 15-inch screens. Panos Panay, head of hardware division in Redmond, makes no secret of it: "The Surface Books 2 are five times as strong in graphics performance as first generation and twice as strong as Apple MacBooks," he promises in presentation in San Francisco.

The trademark of surface books is your hinge, connected to screen and keyboard. It doesn't work, it rolls up. In folded state, hinge to back allows a visible opening, which n closes towards front edge. This is for some buyers getting used to.

A push on a button, a gentle move on screen, and from laptop becomes a full-fledged tablet with Windows 10 Pro. Or tablet is once again flanged around its own axis and n serves as a touchscreen monitor, where you can watch movies or read texts like on a slightly angled stand monitor.

Microsoft holds on to convertible concept

The futuristic design of first surface book was not changed. The minimalist, matt-silver, made of two blocks from full milled magnesium casing is timeless, already generous and backlit tastast judgement of first generation with metal surface and large glass touchpad is still in 15-inch edition Work-friendlier. With new surface books, former external video output differs from a USB-C port with video function. Orwise, re is a full program of connections, as is case with Microsoft: from SD card reader to USB port and headphone jack. The stereo loudspeaker receive Dolby technology.

Microsoft is forcing this idea of so-called Convertables, which is supposed to make laptop a Allroundwerkzeug, quasi Swiss pocket knife of PC industry. The still very young history of PC and Tabletfertigung in Redmond has seen many ups and downs. The latest neck beat was a withdrawal of purchase recommendation for Microsoft's laptops and tablets by Consumer report, quasi foundation of US merchandise test. In lab tests, equipment would have been excellently cut off, but possible failure rate was too high, it says. Up to 25 percent of buyers could be expected to be damaged by end of second year.

Microsoft again speaks vehemently. But damage to image is re, and analysts are already speculating on how long CEO Satya Nadella, who has also quickly cleaned up Nokia disaster, will stick to loss-taking division.

But one thing is clear: a setting of Microsoft's PC hardware would not only be admission of a serious defeat. At same time, it would also mean factual from Microsoft stores, which, after example of Apple shops, are shooting in more and more cities from ground. There's something you have to sell, after all.
