2 teenagers killed, state trooper injured in head-on crash near Coos Bay

Two teenagers died, a third suffered major injuries and a state trooper was hurt when a Mitsubishi crashed into an Oregon State Police pickup truck on Highway 101 near Coos Bay Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Around 1:30 p.m., the driver of the Mitsubishi was headed south near milepost 241, Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier said in a press release. As the vehicle attempted to negotiate a turn, the driver lost control and drifted into the northbound lanes of the road.

Witnesses told investigators that the Mitsubishi appeared to be speeding.

The Mitsubishi collided head-on with the state trooper's truck, which was traveling north, and a third vehicle crashed while trying to avoid the wreck, Frasier said.

The driver and passenger of the Mitsubishi, both 18-year-old males from the Coos Bay area, died at the scene. A 16-year-old girl, who was riding in the back seat, was flown to the River Bend Hospital in Eugene with life-threatening injuries.

The state trooper was taken to Bay Area Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was expected to be released by Sunday evening.

The occupants of the third vehicle, a man, a woman and two children, were uninjured, Frasier said.

The names of those involved were not released.

An investigation into the crash would be headed up by the Coos County Sheriff's Office and anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact them.
