An explosion sounded over Kyiv less than an hour after the transition to the year 2023, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital saying that the air defense system was “working” to protect the city against Russian strikes.

“Explosion heard in the capital. The air defense is (operational),” Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram after the explosion heard around 0:35 a.m. (22:35 GMT).
