The assembly of the ring, this new work of art that will be installed at the entrance to the Place Ville-Marie esplanade began on Monday.

This giant art installation with a diameter of 30 m will weigh nearly 23,000 kg and will be erected between two towers.

The pieces that form the ring began arriving late last week in downtown Montreal.

The grand unveiling is scheduled for June 16.

The ring will first be assembled on the ground and then lifted to be anchored between the two towers. About 15 segments spread over six sections will be anchored to the buildings.

On Monday, workers were perched on scaffolds to install the anchors.

The delicate lifting operation will be planned according to the weather, and should last three days. The place where the ring will be fixed is in a corridor of wind, making the operation even more complex.

The project caused a lot of ink to flow when it was announced, due in particular to the use of stainless steel parts from the United States.

The ring is a creation of the Montreal landscape architecture firm, Claude Cormier et Associé. This one has become known in particular for its “18 shades of gay”, made up of the famous colored balls which have long floated above Sainte-Catherine Street, in Le Village.
