LOS ANGELES — A weak weather system will trigger light showers in the Los Angeles area today, according to the National Weather Service.

Less than a quarter-inch of rain is expected in most areas, according to an NWS statement, and both clouds and precipitation should start to clear out tonight, setting the stage for a bout of dry weather forecast to last through Saturday afternoon.

The chance of precipitation was set at 50 percent today in most of L.A County but 60 percent in the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational area.

Northerly winds are expected Wednesday into Thursday before shifting to the northeast Friday amid a weak Santa Ana event, the NWS said.

Rain is expected to return at the weekend, persisting into early next week, according to the NWS.

A combination of rain and cloudy skies was forecast in L.A. County today, along with highs of 55 degrees Fahrenheit on Mount Wilson; 60 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 61 in Saugus; 62 in Avalon, Woodland Hills and Burbank; 63 in Pasadena and at LAX; 64 in San Gabriel; and 65 in Long Beach and downtown L.A.

Temperatures will fall by 2-3 degrees Wednesday amid cloudy skies in L.A. County and sunny skies in San Bernardino County. Thursday is forecast to be sunny and in the low 60s. No rain is expected until Sunday and Monday.
