Tuesday's National Weather Service forecast of "abundant moisture" just might push February 2017 into the lead over February 2006 when the airport recorded 10.03 inches for the month (we're currently at 9.72 inches).

By Tuesday night, colder air associated with the upper level trough will sag into the metro area bringing light cold showers and significantly lowering snow levels into Wednesday. That colder air and low snow levels will remain through the weekend. The Cascades, especially in the central portion of Oregon, could see plenty of new snow. Mountain passes will feature winter driving conditions.

In Portland, showers are likely for Wednesday mainly after 10 a.m. and the high is forecast for 45 degrees.

With the snow level hovering around 1000 feet, it's possible more heavy showers will bring some mixed rain and snow down to the valley floor. Temperatures should keep any snow from sticking to surfaces below 1000 feet. The National Weather Service warns it's not out of the question to see an inch of snow accumulation down to around 1000 feet on Wednesday, in places including the West Hills of Portland and in the hills around Hockinson and near Sandy.

Cold weather continues on Thursday with mostly cloudy skies, showers and a high near 45.
