UGT fears the "covert privatization" of Renfe Mercancías after alliance with the MSC group

MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

UGT has expressed its fear of the "covert privatization" of Renfe Mercancías after the board of directors of Renfe has approved the proposal through which Medlog, a company of the MSC group, is proposed as a potential strategic partner for its Mercancías area.

"We believe that the process will become a failed attempt at privatization, resulting in the loss of public assets that could be irrecoverable," the union said in a statement on Tuesday.

In this sense, UGT has shown its disagreement with the model presented by Renfe to achieve the viability of goods, since "nothing guarantees that the business achieved with public assets will miraculously begin to be profitable in private hands."

"We consider that the workers who once agreed to work in a public company such as Renfe, must keep their economic, social and labor conditions intact," he stressed.

As explained by the union, last April the three finalist companies for the negotiated tender published by Renfe Mercancías were known, and they were urged to submit their proposals before July 31 of this year.

Of the three finalists, only the Medlog group has presented its proposal which, in the opinion of UGT, has "important shortcomings" to determine that it is the "best solution" for Renfe Mercancías.

For this reason, the UGT representative on the board of directors has voted against continuing with the chosen procedure.

"We understand that we are facing a covert privatization of the public company, which would leave rail freight transport in our country without a reference in this area," UGT stressed.

Added to this, according to UGT, is the lack of a clear maintenance plan that endangers the stability and employment of the Renfe Manufacturing and Maintenance Company, by not making clear its continuity in the maintenance of the railway assets of the new company. .

"They continue without a human resources plan that allows them to anticipate the quality and stability of jobs at Renfe Mercancías and, consequently, there is no guarantee for the maintenance of stable and quality employment," the union added.
