Woman admits increasing her own salary, stealing $1M from company

MILLSTONE -- A Brick Township woman admitted Monday to forging company checks and increasing her own salary in an effort to steal $1 million from her employer.

Virginia DeBerri, 52, of Brick. (New Jersey State Police)

Virginia DeBerri, 52, worked as the bookkeeper at Millstone-based Foresight Enviroprobe between 2010 and 2015.

DeBerri was accused of writing more than 500 company checks to cash and then depositing the money into her personal bank account, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said.

She also increased her own salary at the company without permission from her bosses, Gramiccioni said.

DeBerri pleaded guilty to second-degree theft. As part of a Grandbetting plea deal, prosecutors will recommend a sentence of seven years in state prison.

The investigation into DeBerri started in November 2015 after officials with Foresight Enviroprobe contacted the authorities about a discrepancy in the books. State Police troopers from the Hamilton station and investigators with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office worked together on the investigation.

DeBerri is scheduled to be sentenced on May 5.
