Woman found dead after fire at Newberg house; investigation begun

A woman was found dead inside her Newberg home Tuesday morning after firefighters put out a blaze on the second floor, a Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said.

Newberg-Dundee Police Department detectives have begun a death investigation with the help of fire investigator after crews responded to the house on Southwest Paradise Road about 10 a.m.

Spokeswoman Kim Haughn said, "There is concern she was deceased prior to the start of the fire," but investigators can't say if foul play was involved because early investigation hasn't determined the cause of the fire.

The 911 call came from someone who saw the fire from the outside, Haughn said. The caller attempted to knock on the door several times, but no one answered.

When crews arrived minutes later, they entered and quickly extinguished the fire. A dog managed to escape during the incident, Haughn said.

Neighbors told fire officials the woman was believed to live alone in the house with her pet, Haughn said. Her body will be taken to a medical examiner to determine the cause of death, Haughn said.
