Frankfurt (OR) in summer 1998. The 20-year-old Matthias Freier has put his civilian service behind him and is now holding himself with texts for city magazine of his pal fly over water. He is a punk and squatter, but also a skilful PR entrepreneur. His latest plan: to take over members of Frankfurt SPD with a mass entry and to carry out ir own candidates at forthcoming OB-elections.

If you want to be this candidate, you don't suspect it. Today, however, flies have invited him to a Frankfurt Nobel restaurant to introduce him to local mogul Günr Francis.

I knew from Francis only as much as all or frankfurter. He was a millionaire or a billionaire, at least he had made a lot of money with his car dealerships. He was main sponsor of Victoria Frankfurt, head of Rotary Club, and owned center Hansa Nord. Every now and n he appeared in newspaper because he demanded anything, a highway feeder for example.

Once he had been in a ARD documentary about oppositionists in GDR. At date of broadcast, he rented concert hall and organized a live broadcast re. Free entrance and beer. I went re, but it wasn't a lot of fun. Francis ran in person through foyer and made sure that y all sat down at beginning of transmission. The docu was about as exciting as space night at three on vodka.

And now he was sitting bodily in front of me. For someone who owned half city, he was pretty stressed. He sat bent forward as on leap, his right leg bobbed restlessly up and down. When Fly spoke, he turned his thumb. If he did "HM, HM, HM, HM, HM", it meant that he would interrupt fly monologue in next moment.

Francis asked to fly: "Is he?" Fly nodded and turned to me.

    Roman Extract

This text is an excerpt from new novel "or Florida" by Christian Bangel, published by Piper Verlag. The author works as head of service at time online in Berlin.

"Free," said Fly, pouring last wine into his glass, "You must listen to us now."

At first I understood Francis and did not fly. "What," lifted fly, and kept wine-glass on face height, "What is left of greatest revolution that has ever taken place on German soil?"

"Nothing," said Francis. He also raised his glass. I groaned inwardly. Besides, I was still skeptical. Clearly, it was impressive how people at our demo after fly set hooted: "We can't expect it – Social Democrats". And it was even more impressive that in last three weeks, a hundred people had joined each or loosely. If y would actually all enter SPD, we would suddenly have our own party. But SPD would definitely find ways to prevent mass entry.

Fly held his standard speech on civic participation: interest in democracy had to be revived, it was important not to let go now, and so on. I had already switched off when he said something that sounded different: "And that's why Mr. Francis will do it."

Fly could do good: after long Sermon suddenly something important to say.

    "What?"

"We will set up Mr Francis as top candidate of Frankfurt SPD."
