Sleeping agents, gambling, heroin: Many people are dependent in Germany. By far the biggest problem is according to the place for addiction questions but alcohol consumption.

In Germany, from 15 years onwards, an average of 10.7 litres of pure alcohol is consumed per year. This is what yearbook is looking for in German Central Office for Addiction Issues (DHS), which refers to new calculations for year 2015. "Alcohol is by far most massive problem," said Raphael Gaßmann, general manager of DHS. As a result, consumption has not changed compared to 2013.

Or legal and illegal drugs are also being consumed too much by researchers. The consumption of tobacco products has even risen by three percent in 2017, mainly because it has become a trend among younger people to smoke pipes. Cigarettes and cigarillos were less smoked.

Drug commissioner calls for higher beer and liquor prices

According to report, cannabis is most commonly used illicit drug. Consumption has steadily increased over past 25 years. Because number of drug deaths has increased recently, researchers suspect that people are again taking more hard drugs like heroin.

Furrmore, between around 1.2 and 1.5 million people in Germany are dependent on drugs, especially of sleeping pills. With about 236,000 people, ir relationship to gambling is also problematic.

The federal government's drug commissioner, Marlene Mortler (CSU), demanded higher prices for beer and liquor. "We should talk about wher prices must be less than 20 cents for half a liter of beer or less than four euros for spirits," said Mortler to editorial network in Germany. Alcohol abuse is one of major challenges facing our society. "Almost eight million people drink so much that y endanger ir health," she told new press in Passau.
