- OpenLight Introduces First DR8 800G Photonic IC Design to Power Global Data Center Interconnect Industry

Fully validated design offers customers a shortcut to building 800G DR8 transceivers and speeding time-to-market for data center applications

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Dec. 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenLight, which delivers new levels of performance and scalability to accelerate the design of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for data communication applications, today announced the availability of its first 800G DR8 PIC design intended for data center interconnects. OpenLight has manufactured and tested these wafers using the world's first open silicon photonic foundry platform with integrated lasers offered by Tower Semiconductor.

The PIC 800G DR8 design provides customers with a validated, easy-to-use approach to getting their transceiver production design up and running. Achieving OpenLight with on-chip laser integration and high-speed InP-based modulators eliminates the need to purchase and fit additional lasers into a PIC, offering scalability with high-speed performance and cost-to-scale to address complex designs. Built on Tower Semiconductor's Silicon Photonic Production Process (PH18DA), the 800G DR8 PIC design is a fully validated PIC design with an associated circuit model and test data sets available.

"As the number of users and devices per user increases, the demand for higher bandwidth and data rates will multiply. We are seeing an uptick in the adoption of silicon photonics and we believe our The first-of-its-kind PIC DR8 800G design and available tested samples will help customers rapidly design optical transceiver modules and enable faster time-to-market for emerging datacom needs," said Dr. Thomas Mader, Director of OpenLight operations. Together with Tower, we can deliver scalable design solutions and support the industry's move to 800G and beyond for data centers with embedded lasers."

"Our partnership with OpenLight continues to add new silicon-proven IPs to Tower's open foundry offering, enabling customers to accelerate the development of next-generation silicon photonic products with fully integrated lasers," said Dr. Marco Racanelli, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Tower Semiconductor's Analog Business Unit. The process technology and PDK are available to Tower customers with regularly scheduled shuttles, while higher order IPs, such as the 800G reference design announced here, are available through our partner OpenLight."

800G DR8 PIC sample kits are now available, including design files to allow for customization if desired. High-speed test data is also available. For more information on pricing and availability, contact OpenLight at www.openlightphotonics.com.
