The Arthroscopic Surgery Unit (UCA) directed by Dr. Mikel Sánchez and the OAFI Foundation, the International Osteoarthritis Foundation that is aimed exclusively at people suffering from this disease, have signed a collaboration agreement for the development of therapies, treatments and itineraries Training programs that accelerate the containment of osteoarthritis and, therefore, delay the joint aging of a very prevalent, degenerative and incurable disease that is estimated to affect 500 million people in the world every year, some ten million in Spain. The agreement reached between these two international leaders in the field of this disease is part of the scientific need to develop joint research protocols that allow progress in the containment of osteoarthritis to later implement them in the different therapies and treatments that will benefit the patients. The framework agreement is promoted by the Medical and Scientific Director of the UCA, Dr. Mikel Sánchez, who has extensive experience in this field, and the president of the OAFI Foundation, Josep Vergés. This alliance may represent notable advances in the medical and scientific, since both hope to be able to delay the evolution of a disease as painful as osteoarthritis in a reasonable period of time. "The aim is to change the current paradigm and demonstrate through joint studies that joint aging can be delayed", Dr. Mikel Sánchez has pointed out in this regard. Its incidence in joints such as the hip, knees, hands, feet and spine, mainly, is common, hence its social impact is a serious reality. However, and despite this background, even today it continues to be erroneously perceived as a pathology associated with old age, since its presence is becoming more frequent in middle-aged people, athletes, professionals and young people with sports injuries. little, this disease directly affects people's mobility and their autonomy, "with the psychological wear and tear that this entails," says Dr. Sánchez, who also associates this disease with other comorbid problems such as hypertension or cardiovascular diseases . "In a society like the current one where, fortunately, the life expectancy of the population is increasing, this type of disease should be considered a first-order concern, which is why one of the objectives pursued with this agreement affects this point", abounds Josep Vergés. In this sense, this disease represents the first cause of permanent disability and the third of temporary work disability.
