How important is BMW F ü r M ü Munich?

In meantime, you are still hard at BMW to count: How many buildings and factories are re to find people? But how much does this actually apply to entire city? How Munich is this group BMW? 43 206 people work in greater area for company, where y say that at each job re are seven more jobs on part of suppliers and service personnel. BMW pays a medium three-digit million amount every year as a trade tax to city, which roughly corresponds to one fifth of total trade taxes and just under an eighth of total municipal tax revenue.

When BMW chief Harald Krüger receives him in laying of foundation stone, Prime Minister Horst Seehofer, who is so fond of handling superlatives, says on Friday only one word in front of construction site: "Madness."

With so much exuberance, however, caution is appropriate, just who looks to west to classification, to Stuttgart. This is a pure Autostadt: in south giant supplier Group Bosch, in west Porsche and in east of Daimler. Its central and engine plant lies between Daimler and Benz streets, not a joke. A few metres away is Mercedes-Benz Arena, in which football players with same logo are running. And in evening one meets creator of band in each of chicer bars of city, and on Theodor-Heuss-Straße on Schaffer. Probably biggest celebrity on Neckar: CEO Dieter Zetsche. More car than in Stuttgart, that's hardly possible.

The relationship between Munich and his cars? is more relaxed in spite of large celebrated Grundsteinlegerei. It goes on-even if every fifth car in city is a BMW and group supports events like "Opera for All". Because in Munich just three times as many people live. Because re is only one car builder who settled here also only 1951. And because BMW, measured on stock market value, is just third largest of seven Dax companies based in Munich, behind Siemens and Allianz. Also a blessing by way: You have concern in Stuttgart, what will be when car industry is in a wrong position. Munich would suffer, but not existential.

This is what it looks like in old center, which has long since become too small.

Especially as question of home of group still has to be answered-a question of perspective. In Lower Bavaria beats heart of BMW, with takeover of dingolfing Glass Works 50 years ago, ascent to international group began. In Munich, brain has remained: Central and Fiz in which cars are developed.

Seehofer praises: The construction of new Fiz is for him renewed proof that "BMW is a Bavarian company-with Bavarian soul, but internationally on road". Mayor Dieter Reiter, on or hand, speaks of BMW as "jobs" of Munich, carmaker is a godsend for city, not only because of commercial payments: "is not most important, but quite beautiful." Krüger n brings both points of view toger on formula: BMW confesses "to location Munich" and "to our homeland Bavaria".

A symbol of city is of course high-rise, four-cylinder built to Olympic Games. The BMW world next door attracts about three million people a year, two thirds of m from abroad-it is one of most visited places in Bavaria. If you ask company historians, n four cylinder is one of very few friction points in orwise long time completely unspectacular coexistence: building was not ready in time to games, but managers wanted to give world neverless Propeller, BMW logo. And so y tinkered a pre-release version of Signet on top of construction site-which caused some trouble with city administration.

Orwise: almost no conflicts. Also because BMW has a different appearance than Daimler: The CEO Krüger is quiet, likes little round. It acts in a similar way to workers who carry out ir debates-about temporary workers, about efficiency pressure-practically always behind factory gates. At Daimler, Zetsche likes to give contentious show master. And Swabian Schaffer are more likely to carry out ir conflicts, also because y are less heard here than in Munich, where Quandt family is an anchor shareholder for rest.
