Time Online: Professor Deaton, Donald Trump Istangetreten, to improve situation of workers in US. What has been achieved?

Angus Deaton: He did nothing to help se people, but a lot of what hurt m.

Time Online: One of its main goals was and is to abolish Obamacare.

de Aton: Obamacare is a good example of this, WelchePrioritäten Donald Trump sets. He behaves like a right-looking Republican who talks to companies about his mouth.

    Sir Angus Deaton

Is professor emeritus of Economics and International Relations at Princeton University and received 2015 The Alfred Nobel Memory prize for economics. He recently dealt with situation of white working class in USA.

Time Online: What would you do as US president?

de Aton: This is not easy to answer. I would probably advocate a policy that will ensure rising real wages. Raising minimum wage would also be a good idea. In addition, US needs a different social system. There should be a right to state support, even if you have not worked before. I would strengn cartel law. Companies must be made more difficult to obtain a monopoly position.

Time Online: Do you think it is realistic that Sweden Trump implements such measures?

de Aton: I have impression that neir dieRepublikaner in Congress nor president have any interest in it.

Time Online: What's problem? is lobby making derWirtschaft too big?

de Aton: The companies have been fighting se ideas since Jahrenmit of all power. And y are currently in struggle between work and capital DieOberhand. The once influential representatives of workers, such as unions, have hardly any influence.

    Time Online: What are consequences?

de Aton: The people of United States suffer from diesemungleichen power relations. Because what is with working class in USAgeschehen was not inevitable. It is not a logical consequence of DerGlobalisierung or technological change, as some say. DieSituation is result of political decisions that have redistributed income of company from working class to top.

So far, left movement has no serious political weight. Angus Deaton

Time Online: But US economy is doing just fine, unemployment is low, growth is stable.

de Aton: That is true, but also a purely makroökonomische consideration. And it's dangerous. Many people Fallenzurück, although economy is doing well.

Time Online: After all, in past eight years, Barack Obama has been a Democrat US president. For so-called suspended Sichtrotzdem did not really improve anything.

de Aton: The Democrats were once party that stood for DieInteressen working class. That is no longer case today. The Democrats have set or priorities. The people who talk about Wirgerade have no advocate in Washington. And since election of Trump, that certainly hasn't gotten any better.

Time Online: Donald Trump is quasi head of a right-wing movement against elite from Washington and social divide in country. It gababer with Bernie Sanders also a leftist counter-movement. Does this Gleichzeitigkeitnicht mean that something really needs to change sooner or later?

de Aton: This is a development that I welcome. But I me not sure where that will actually lead. So far, left movement has no serious political weight. There have already been past attempts to institutionalise justice more closely, such as Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which is doing a very good job. We Nurbrauchen much more of it. And under Trump, se institutions are ehergeschwächt.
