Russian police capture more than 60 demonstrators

The Russian police forcibly dissolved a government-critical demonstration in St. Petersburg and, according to activists, detained more than 60 participants. On occasion of 65 birthday of Russia's head of state Vladimir Putin, government critics had gone to streets in numerous cities of country. They demanded Putin's resignation. In city of Moscow, 1000 demonstrators had gared and called on Pushkin's Place: "Russia will be free" and "Russia without Putin".

People were also arrested for protests in Russian cities of Tver and Samara in centre of country. The divided representative of opposition. The opposition politician Alexei Navalny called for demonstrations. Navalny wanted to mobilize thousands of followers.

Navalny still under arrest

The self-proclaimed anti-corruption fighter had denounced in recent months in numerous video clips on internet alleged machinations of Russian leadership and ir confidants. Navalny himself could not demonstrate. He sits in arrest for multiple call for unapproved protests for 20 days. He was arrested at end of September. A Moscow court had dismissed an appeal on Friday.

The authorities in Moscow and St. Petersburg had banned meetings planned in city centres. In Moscow, however, several hundred demonstrators gared, as reporters of news agency AFP reported. According to eyewitness witnesses, police presence in centre of capital was strengned.

In Russian Krasnodar, chief of staff of opposition politician Navalny was detained, as Russian media reported on Saturday night. The Ministry of Interior confirmed this to Russian agency Tass.
