NetzDG: Facebook wants to act with 10,000 new employees against baiting

Facebook has announced that it is increasing its efforts to combat hate comments with 10,000 new employees. "We haven't done enough to stop misuse of our technology," said Facebook managing director Sheryl Sandberg. Terror and violence have no place on Facebook.

Already today, 10,000 employees worked to improve protection and security. By end of year figure should double, said Sandberg. The aim is to delete hateful content. All users should feel safe. This is complicated, however, as re is no universal definition of hate content, said Sandberg. Follow scientific discourse and delete a lot of content. "But we can still get better," she said. We oriented to European standards. This also included guidelines for dealing with hate content. The EU is primarily committed to self-commitment and has agreed on a code of conduct with Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and YouTube that will allow companies to review and remove hate comments.

In Germany, on or hand, since beginning of year, Network Enforcement Act, which obliges social networks to delete or block "Offensichtlichrechtswidriger content" when threatening heavy fines. Facebook had repeatedly criticized law. In Germany, too, law was criticized: it was task of courts to decide on illegality of content, not that of a private group like Facebook. The federal government has announced that it will review law.

Easier management of privacy settings

Sandberg also announced that it would make it easier for Facebook users to control ir data. In order to comply with new data protection standards in EU, it will be possible in future to process entire privacy settings centrally. The basic data Protection Regulation enters into force in May with aim of better protecting personal data and making processing of data by companies more uniform. If companies violate requirements, y will face punitive payments of up to 20 million euros or up to four percent of ir worldwide turnover

The group also took note of tax debate in Europe and changed its approach. "We are now paying local taxes on profits we make locally," said Sandberg. Facebook go for concerns. "More important than anything else is: we want to do right thing," said Sandberg.
