An Orlando-based seafood distributor has been sold to a Virgina food industry giant.
Performance Food Group of Richmond, Va. has bought the wholesale operations of Bar Harbor Seafood and its warehouse near Orange Blossom Trail and Sand Lake Road.
Bar Harbor has 152 employees and sources seafood for sale to restaurants, retailers and distributors.
“We get our seafood from all over the world,” said founder and owner Jeff Hazell.
The parties did not disclose terms of the deal.
Hazell will remain president and the employees will continue working at the 41,000-square-foot warehouse on Premier Row.
Performance Food Group is one of the country’s major restaurant and retail food distributors, similar to Sysco and US Foods.
Bar Harbor is a niche company, Hazell said, and will fit in nicely with its new, larger parent.
Hazell started the company in 1986 by selling live lobsters to local restaurants out of his garage. Last year revenues registered at about $73 million.
"Bar Harbor Seafood is a highly regarded organization dedicated to delivering a full range of live, fresh and frozen seafood items with a reputation for high-quality products and great service," said PFG executive vice president of operations Jim Hope in a statement. "This acquisition will enable Performance Foodservice to expand its seafood offerings and strengthen its focus on independent street business and specialty customers in the Florida market."
Bar Harbor also owners two restaurants and a retail operation, which it is keeping. Those Boston Lobster Feast restaurants are on International Drive and in Kissimmee.
The Bar Harbor’s retail market sells seafood to the public and has walk-up lobster roll eatery at its company headquarters at 2000 Premier Row.
