RELEASE: The road-approved racing car: the ABT XGT

KEMPTEN, Germany, Nov. 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The XGT combines two worlds: Born as a thoroughbred GT2 car, the DTM racing team and vehicle customizer created the most exclusive vehicle to ever come out of the ABT factory in Kempten in an extremely complex two-year development process. With 640 hp and 1,400 kg, a limited edition of 99 units and the simply impressive appearance of a racing machine, the road-approved vehicle is aimed at sporty drivers and motorsport enthusiasts. This uniqueness gives the XGT a special appeal that will also delight collectors.

As a traditional racing team, ABT Sportsline has contested more than 300 races in the DTM since 2000, has achieved dozens of individual victories and more than 250 podiums, and is currently the most successful active team in the DTM. The best requirements for an ambitious project like the XGT. But it is more than just a project: "It was the challenge itself that drove us to develop this unique complete vehicle. The XGT is the quintessence of our heritage," highlighted Hans-Jürgen Abt. And it was not easy to take the racing GT2 to the road: the requirements of motorsport and road traffic are too far apart. Actually.

"From idea to realization it has been two very intense years," said Thomas Biermaier, CEO of ABT Sportsline, who came up with the idea for the XGT together with Ernst Christian Scherer, CEO of Scherer Sport, after an exciting and successful career. They had long harbored the dream of tackling a project like this. "Our engineers and mechanics had to overcome some difficult challenges." With nearly 40 individual homologations, the months-long homologation process went beyond the scope of conventional vehicle development. The highlight: Visually, the road version only slightly differs from the racing Audi R8 LMS GT2. The XGT is not a supercar that looks like a racing car, but rather a racing car approved for road use.

Technical modifications in the areas of thermal management, software and the very complex vehicle diagnostic system have been carefully applied to preserve the character of the racing car. For daily use, the standard refueling system was integrated, the instrument panel was modified for civil use and the handbrake, central locking and even a reversing camera and an immobilizer were added.

The dashboard has been adapted for road use and controls the electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, air conditioning and turn signals.
