LOS ANGELES, July 3, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG) released a new report outlining the numbers of participation corresponding to the inaugural edition of Universal Acceptance Day (UA). According to the report, thousands of members of the global Internet community participated in this historic event on five continents. Celebrated on March 28, 2023, and co-hosted by ICANN and the UASG volunteer group, AU Day was established as a means to convene local, regional and global stakeholders to raise awareness about the UA and encourage its adoption through virtual, face-to-face and hybrid training and information sessions. AU Day marked the first time that a diverse group of technical and linguistic communities, businesses, governments, and stakeholders from the Domain Name System (DNS) industry mobilized to promote AU and a multilingual Internet at scale. world.

The main event of AU Day was held in New Delhi, India and was organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India (MeitY) through the National Internet Exchange Point of India (NIXI), in collaboration with ICANN and the UASG. In addition, numerous events took place over a three-month period between the end of February and May 2023. In most cases, these events took place on or about March 28, 2023. Participants represented the following multi-stakeholder groups: the business sector; the government sector, including telecommunications regulators; research institutes; non-governmental and civil society organizations, including At-Large structures and Internet Society (ISOC) chapters; companies in the IT sector and technological ventures; telecommunication companies; members of the DNS industry; Internet service providers and hosting providers; and members of the academic sector, including faculty and students.

"UA Day was established as a way to raise awareness of the benefits of AU globally and encourage its adoption," said Anil Kumar Jain, President of the UASG. "The enthusiastic response from stakeholders around the world is encouraging and makes it clear that a more inclusive and multilingual Internet through Universal Acceptance is sorely needed."

UA is technically necessary to ensure that all valid domain names and email addresses, regardless of script, language, or character length, can be used equally across all devices, Internet-enabled systems and applications. It is considered a fundamental requirement for the continued expansion of the Internet. Since 2009, there are significant changes taking place in the domain name ecosystem: in the total number of top-level domains (TLDs) available, the number of TLD characters, and the scripts that can be used. However, the checks used in many software applications to validate domain names and email addresses often use rules that were created many years ago. The implementation of the UA guarantees that all users take full advantage of the social and economic benefits offered by the Internet, thanks to the use of the domain name and email address that best suits their interests, commercial activity, culture, language and writing code.

"The AU is a strategic priority for ICANN. As the cornerstone of today's global Internet, it is critical to consumer choice and connecting the next billion users to the Internet," said Sally Costerton, President and ICANN Acting Executive Director. "We are proud to partner with the inaugural AU Day and look forward to participating in future awareness campaigns to help make the Internet more inclusive for all users, regardless of what language they speak or write."
