REMUNERATION: PAY CONTINUES TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR STUDENTS WHEN CHOOSING A NEW JOB

Universum research highlights that students are focusing on compensation and training/development above all other factors – a flight towards traditional career priorities in an uncertain global economy.

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The World's Most Attractive Employers (WMAE) rankings for 2023 have been revealed and there is high favor this year for companies that can offer high future earnings, competitive salaries and training and professional development.

“The WMAE 2023 rankings showcase the hard-won victories of traditional employer brands such as JP Morgan and Mercedes Benz, which have gained significant ground this year,” said Yusuf Azoz, CEO of Universum.

Universum, a global leader in employer branding, surveyed more than 172,000 business, engineering and IT students across the 9 largest economies between October 2022 and May 2023. The research also found:

Apple and Google retained their top rankings in 2023. Business students choose Apple, Google and JP Morgan more than any other employer brand; engineering students opt for Google, Microsoft and BMW Group; and IT students place Google, Microsoft and Apple in their top three positions.

Facebook continues to fall: it now ranks 35th for business students (6 positions less), 34th for engineering students (10 positions less) and 18th for computer science students (3 positions less).

Tesla, despite its reputation as a complex workplace, quickly rose in the rankings in 2023. It first appeared in the ranking of business students at 38th, 16th among engineers (up 10 points) and 19th among IT students (9 points higher than in 2022).

Flexible working and work-life balance are even more important in 2023, continuing a multi-year rise for these two key attributes.

Richard Mosley, Director of Global Clients at Universum, says the 2023 study offers a unique insight into the “real-life” trade-offs students make when choosing their first company to work for: “Quality of life factors , such as flexible working and work-life balance, are priorities for young people, but students are willing to "trade" them for other factors such as a higher salary or good references."
