US president Donald Trump responded to European criticism of his customs plans with a threat: if Europeans, in response to import duties on steel and aluminium that he announced, would now also increase ir "already massive" tariffs, n " We simply levy a tax on ir vehicles that are free to flow into our land, "he wrote on Twitter. If Trump resets this threat, major German automotive companies would be affected, as well as US media.

According to VDA Industry Association, sales of German automakers in USA had 2017 in total by about one percent to 1,350,000 new cars. The n VDA chief Matthias Wissmann had stressed that he expected "that we can furr increase our market share in year 2018".

Both Washington Post and New York Times titled after tweet in ir online editions with "Trump escalating trade war". Trump has long lamented that more Mercedes cars can be seen in New York than Chevrolets in Germany, wrote The Washington Post. The president's attack was largely a "direct threat" to Germany. One of his Topberater, Peter Navarro, also believes that German carmakers had stolen market shares in United States: They carried out even in mass vehicles, but conversely limited number of car sales in ir own country.

The car imports made it impossible, according to Trump, to sell ir own cars, which he called "big trade Imbalance".
