Why do we hate pigeons so much?

Some New Yorkers think of pigeons as “rats with wings.”

Artist Tina Piña Trachtenburg, who calls herself Mother Pigeon, sees the common city scavenger in a much different light.

“To me, pigeons are little beds of flowers as I walk around the city,” Trachtenburg told The Post.

“So much cooler than human beings,” the eccentric bird lover added.

Trachtenburg takes pigeon food with her everywhere she goes and feeds flocks of birds on different street corners.

“If I miss a day, the pigeons will see me from the rooftop and come down, out of hundreds of people walking down the street, they will come down and know it’s me,” Trachtenburg said of the birds’ unique ability to recognize humans.

When Trachetnburg is not feeding pigeons, she’s making sculptures of them from fabric, wire and recycled stuffing from a sweater factory.

Trachtenburg takes her creations with her to the park where she sells them to passersby.

“I do sell them, and people adopt them, so its folk art mixed with performance art,” she said.

Pigeons can teach humans a thing or two about sharing, believes Trachtenburg.

Pigeons share their food with their fellow birds and are communal eaters.

“They mate for life. Both the mother and the father feed their young, so they both make milk in their crop for the baby,” Trachtenburg told The Post.

City dwellers often don’t look twice when a pigeon goes by, something Trachtenburg is trying to change with her art.

“My life’s work is showing my love for an animal that so many people disdain, in hopes that people will see the beauty that I see and maybe someday love them or at least like them too,” Trachetenburg said.
