BRUNSWICK --- Voters across Medina County will decide on a number of candidates and issues in the May 2 primary election.

The Medina County Board of Elections certified all submitted ballot petitions at a meeting Feb. 2, a day after the filing deadline.

Brunswick

Brunswick Mayor Ron Falconi is running unopposed in the primary, but incumbent councilpersons Alex Johnson, Brian K. Ousley, and Patricia Hanek will face three challengers in the city's Council-at-Large race. Former Brunswick councilmen, Joseph P. Delsanter, along with residents Dan Geyer and Jim Nabors have each filed petitions.

Brunswick voters will also decide on a five-year, .65 percent municipal income tax increase, commencing in 2018, to maintain staffing levels in the city's fire and police departments. The income tax is designed to replace a .5 percent income tax that is expiring Dec. 31, 2017, with an additional .15 percent increase.

Medina

Several candidates will be vying to fill the seat of retiring Medina Municipal Court Judge, Dale Chase. Voters will choose one candidate within each party. Three Republican candidates- current Brunswick Councilman, Joe Salzgeber; former Brunswick councilman and mayor, Gary Werner; and Medina attorney, Frederick C. Bougher - have filed petitions for the May 2 primary. Democrat J.R. Russell, also a Medina-based attorney, is running unopposed.

In the Medina County Municipal Court Clerk primary, incumbent Nancy Abbot will face Medina Republican, Thomas C. Decker.

County voters will also decide on the Medina County Library District's proposed 10-year, 1.5-mill levy to maintain current expenses at the district's six branches. The levy represents the renewal of an existing 1.25-mill levy, with a 0.25-mill increase.
