Restaurant workers accused of spitting in cops’ food

The officers of Florida’s Jacksonville Police Department may find a burger joint’s food mouthwatering — but in the wrong way.

Police Chief Patrick Dooley sent an internal warning letter to his department Monday after he was notified by the owner of a local restaurant called Cruisers Grill of an alleged disturbing practice by employees targeting police.

“It has come to my attention that the owner of Cruisers has given indications that his employees in the past or will in the future spit saliva in the food of law enforcement,” read the letter, obtained by Action News Jax, with the subject line “Health Safety Information.”

“While I will not issue an order prohibiting patronization of Cruisers, please use caution for health and safety reasons if you choose to eat at this establishment. I am providing you this information so that you may make informed personal decisions,” Dooley wrote.

Dooley said should the owner or employees of the Jacksonville Beach burger chain “request police assistance, my expectation is, as always, that you provide the highest level of professional customer service.”

Cruisers owner Bobby Handmaker denied the claims, calling them “false rumors.”

“For over 20 years, Cruisers Grill has supported our police officers and appreciates the opportunity to serve them and their families,” Handmaker said in a statement to the news network.

“We are deeply disappointed and saddened to hear that false rumors regarding Cruisers Grill are being circulated,” the statement read. “There is no factual basis to any claims that Cruisers Grill does not support law enforcement.”

According to Action News Jax, the police department became aware of the alleged spitting case after Handmaker reportedly told an officer, “I have been made aware for quite some time now that some of my employees have been spitting in officers’ food and now I know why, because you are all bullies.”
