VAN NUYS >> A man was expected to survive Tuesday after being shot by a deputy the day before in Van Nuys after authorities said he allegedly pulled out a gun after an investigation into possible drug usage.
The shooting occurred at 2:45 p.m. Monday at a Cuban restaurant in the 7300 block of Van Nuys Boulevard said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials.
Before the incident, officials said, a Transit Policing Division deputy was eating lunch when he saw a group of males on the patio of the location and witnessed at least one man using what appeared to be drugs. Sheriff’s department Sgt. Aura Sierra said she had no information on what kind of drug was allegedly used.

Authorities said the deputy walked outside, and two male Hispanics walked away, heading northbound and out of view. The deputy detained two other Hispanic men and conducted a pat down of the first man.
After the deputy patted down the second man, officials explained, that suspect allegedly produced a handgun. At that point, the deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was hit by gunfire.
The wounded man was transported to a local hospital, where he is in serious condition and is expected to survive, Sierra said. His name and the name of the other man who was detained were not immediately released.
Authorities added that a handgun they believe was possessed by the wounded man was recovered at the scene.
Sierra said the investigation was continuing and would involve identifying the men who walked away.

The sheriff’s department was handling the investigation because their deputy was involved in the shooting. Some of the sheriff’s department transit division areas traverse through the Los Angeles Police Department’s enforcement area, said sheriff’s Sgt. Vincent Plair on Monday.
