Civil war in Syria: Helpers should have sexually exploited women in Syria

Emergency aid, food rations only in return for sex – that is in many parts of Syria's everyday life for a lot of women. It is BBC's report, citing several development workers from Syria. Thus, local helpers often demand sexual favors from women in need. The helpers should also be local organisations working with United Nations, in fact, to alleviate humanitarian crisis on ground.

According to BBC, United Nations claims to have knowledge of such misconduct among its local partners and pledges a zero-tolerance policy. Because of dangerous situation in country, many international organisations rely on support of local helpers.

Women exchanged sexual acts for food or driving services, says assistant Danielle Spencer to British broadcaster. The rations would be held back. In some cases, women refused to go to issue of aid organizations in order not to be considered promiscuous.

The phenomenon is not new. In autumn, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) published a report examining situation of women in Syria. Thus, women suffer particularly from civil War. Often y are exposed to sexual violence unprotected. Especially young women, refugees and widows are refore at risk of becoming victims of sexual assault. The report also mentions attacks by helpers. "Sexual exploitation of helpers in distribution campaigns is often reported by those affected," report states. "The more a girl gives distributor, more help she gets," report quotes a Syrian. Help is not for nothing, says anor. The report does not talk about attacks by helpers associated with United Nations.
