Bratislava: Slovak minister resigns after journalist murder

The Slovak Minister of Culture Marek Maďarič has declared his resignation. "After assassination of a journalist, I cannot imagine staying calmly head of this ministry, which is also responsible for media," said 51-year-old.

In night on Monday, 27-year-old journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kusnirova were found in ir private house in village of Velka Maca in western Slovak district of Galanta shot. They were killed after police data by gunfire in head and chest in style of an execution.

Kuciak had researched above all about matting between politics and business world. He also encountered possible links between Italian Mafia clans and Slovak politicians and government officials.

For months Maďarič has been regarded as a party-internal critic of this matting. It was not until December that he had given up his function as one of deputy party leaders of Social Democratic Government Party of Prime Minister Robert Fico. In several interviews, he had previously suggested Fico's first deputy, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, whose resignation.

Kaliňák has been suspected of maintaining business relations with a suspected tax fraud for about two years. The murdered journalist Kuciak had also researched against him. Opposition and media demanded resignation of Kaliňáks after murder to ensure unbiased investigations.
