Espionage: Opposition politicians call for intelligence on hacker attack

Opposition politicians have called for rapid clarification after hacker attack on data network of federal government and security authorities, which has so far been considered safe. It must be clarified, among or things, "which data are specifically drained and wher a security gap was used in course of attack, German authorities were known," said Green Group vice-president Konstantin von Notz.

Previously, an "attack on information technology and networks of Confederation" had become known, which confirmed Federal Ministry. Hackers, probably from Russia, may have had access to government data for up to one year. In Foreign Office re was an incident, reported Süddeutsche Zeitung and DPA. According to DPA, data should also have been stolen. The Ministry of Interior did not want to give any information on extent of attack. Presumably, behind hack is same group that 2015 had carried out an attack on network of German Bundestag.

"If after recent devastating attacks on Bundestag and ors now also much better protected government network and ministries are concerned, this shows how bad it is for IT security in our country as a whole," said von Notz.

Special meeting of Digital Committee

The Chairman of Greens group in Bundestag Digital committee, Dieter Janecek, said to Berliner Zeitung: "If this is true, this is a form of warfare against Germany." It is problematic, for example, when contact data from human rights groups or information about conversations get into wrong hands. "The government must inform us about this."

The FDP chairman in Digital Agenda Committee, Manuel Höferlin, criticized on Twitter that he had heard of attack from press. That's an "insolence." For Thursday, he announced a special meeting of Committee. "It will provide first-hand information about hack on networks of Confederation. We're excited! " The parliamentary director of FDP, Marco Buschmann, expressed same opinion. Digital security seems to be "new territory" for federal government. The digital political spokesman of SPD Bundestag group, Jens Zimmermann, also calls for clarification from government and hopes for committee: "The federal government must inform Parliament fully," he wrote on Twitter.

The left group deputy André Hahn called for a special meeting of parliamentary control body of Bundestag. "The federal government is obliged by law to provide information to Secret Service panel in such cases," he also told Berliner Zeitung.
