Once again, soldiers of the UN peacekeeping mission Minusma died in Mali. The Bundeswehr is also involved in the efforts to pacify the African country.

Three soldiers of UN peacekeeping mission Minusma died in Mali. The blue soldiers had driven ir vehicle to a mine or a remote detonation, as UN mission shared. Two more soldiers were injured. The incident thus occurred near town of Kidal in norast of Mali.

Minusma is one of most dangerous UN missions. With mission, UN wants to monitor that peace agreement between government and rebels in Mali is respected. 11,000 UN soldiers from 50 nations are involved in mission. Neverless, re are always attacks, especially in north of Mali, where Islamists and Tuareg rebels fight for influence and power. For example, in August, six men attacked UN base in Timbuktu with grenades and Kalashnikovs and killed several people.

The Bundeswehr also participates in UN mission. The Bundestag had decided in January to expand its deployment in Mali. Thus up to 1,000 German soldiers can be sent to UN mission. The majority of m are stationed in east of Gao. About 70 kilometers north of city, a Bundeswehr helicopter crashed at end of July, both crew members had died.

After a military coup in year 2012, Islamists and rebels had occupied large areas in norrn Mali. The former colonial power of France attacked in January 2013 militarily to halt advance of Islamists and rebels in south of country and to support weakened government forces. Later, French military transferred responsibility to Minusma.
