Mediterranean: Many deaths in the event of a refugee accident in Italy

At least 30 people died when their inflatable boat was capsized on the Mediterranean Sea. Some 700 refugees were rescued in several rescue operations.

When trying to reach Italian coast on a boat, at least 30 people have died. As UN Refugee unit UNHCR has shown, many more are missing. There have been several rescue operations.

A helicopter from EU naval mission Sophia had previously discovered a sinking inflatable boat on Mediterranean Sea. As mission on Facebook said, many people are driven in water. As a result, rescue workers recovered 23 deaths, 64 people could be saved. According to Italian coastguard, a total of about 700 people from Mediterranean were rescued on Friday at six different missions.

This year, far fewer refugees than in previous year arrived in Italy. Thus far 110,000 people would have reached country, about one third less than in previous year, 2017. In last few days, however, re have been more and more rescue operations off Italian coast. According to International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 2,800 people have died in Mediterranean this year.
