Politics and the media must take care of the real needs of the people, says CDU politician Polenz. This is the mission to Jamaica – and the best remedy against the AfD.

Time Online: How long will Angela Merkel remain chancellor and CDU chairwoman? Ruprecht Polenz: She has a new mandate as chancellor until 2021, CDU decides on party presidency every two years. I reckon we'll be seeing you for quite a while in both offices. Time Online: If Jamaica negotiations fail, n only elections will remain. Then Merkel would surely not come back?

Polenz: I hope it works out with black-yellow-green government. If not, it depended on Merkel wher she would once again be a top candidate. Time online: Regardless of wher coalition is established and lasts for four years: should CDU not seriously ask leadership question after its debacle in Bundestag election? The SPD also discusses its Chairman Schulz.

Polenz: The SPD also has every reason to do so. The CDU has won three out of four landtag elections this year, including SPD-country NRW, and it has disputed Bundestag election so that no government can be formed against it.

Time Online: But it has lost more percentage points in Covenant than SPD. And Merkel can only continue to govern with a four-party coalition with Greens.

From April to November 2000 was first CDU general secretary of Angela Merkel and from 2005 to 2013 chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of Bundestag. He is still very active on Facebook.

Polenz: An election will decide what to do next. The government mandate is clearly Union. But of course we cannot be satisfied with result.

Time Online: The CDU and especially CSU have been discussing since election wher Union needs to move back to right. Has CDU not actually freed right of itself, which now occupy right-wing populists?

Polenz: It is task of all parties to oppose right-wing populism. All parties have lost votes to AfD. As far as position of CDU is concerned, Wolfgang Schäuble once said: Union must be integrated into middle. This is not done by running to right edge and remaining re. Time Online: So you're swinging against a right? Polenz: Yes. For every AfD voter, which is brought back by AfD-light slogans, you lose two in middle.

Time Online: But does CDU not come into a similar terminal as SPD with Left Party – squeezed between AfD, which will not disappear so quickly, and SPD, FDP and greens on or side?
