Study: Teacher union complains about long working hours

According to a study by Union of Education and Science (WT), teachers in Germany are working longer than comparable employees in public sector. For 20 years, teachers have been constantly being saddled with new tasks and number of compulsory hours has been partly increased, said federal chairman Marlis Tepe at presentation of study. As examples she called challenges of full-time teaching, inclusion UndSprachförderung.

The health of teachers is endangered and re is an urgent need for a noticeable discharge. For teachers in elementary schools, in general schools and high school, WT had to evaluate 20 studies on working time from past 60 years.

According to study, teachers per week work one hour and 40 minutes longer than or public servants, with school holidays already taken into account. As a result, between 14 and 19 per cent of teachers move even in area of long working hours of more than 48 hours in school week.

The Göttingen social scientist Frank Mußmann, who led investigation, sees teachers on average worse off due to too high working time targets compared to comparable employees in public sector. "The reductions in working hours in recent decades have only been delayed and not complete," study says. There was also a lack of recreational opportunities during school breaks. The seven-day week is quasi obligatory in school and resolution of working time limits is almost rule.
