The Lakeview neighborhood is getting a second new Target store this year.

Target plans to open a 31,000-square-foot store at 3300 N. Ashland Ave. in October, the retailer said Tuesday. Target previously had announced plans for a store at 3200 N. Clark St., set to open in July.

The Ashland Avenue Target is replacing a Whole Foods Market store, which is moving to the intersection of Ashland, Lincoln and Belmont avenues this year.

The new Lakeview stores are part of Target's plan to grow its business in urban areas with smaller "flexible-format" stores carrying products tailored to the local neighborhood's customers.

At the Ashland Avenue store, that means health, personal care and beauty products, a selection of apparel, toys and sporting goods, and home decor for apartments and condos, Target said. The store also will have a CVS Pharmacy.

Chicago is among the top 10 markets where Target aims to expand its smaller stores, based in part on the dense population and performance of existing stores, Target spokeswoman Kristy Welker said.

Target currently has 32 flexible-format stores, including locations in the Streeterville, Lincoln Park and Hyde Park neighborhoods. The retailer has announced 33 more openings by 2019, including Skokie and Oak Park stores also expected to open in October.
