Angels’ Kaleb Cowart tweaks his batting stance

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kaleb Cowart has tweaked his swing, the latest move as he tries to unlock the offensive performance that has so far held him back.

Cowart said he’s shifted with weight more toward the middle of his stance, rather than as far back as it was. A switch-hitter, Cowart said the change is from both sides of the plate.

So far? “I like it a lot,” he said. “It feels good.”

Cowart, 24, has hit .176 in the majors in stints over the past two seasons. Formerly one of the Angels’ top prospects as a third baseman, he’s now being developed as a utility player, working at first and second, in addition to third.

Barring injury, the Angels don’t appear to have a spot for Cowart to get regular big-league action this season, but there could be plenty of openings in 2018, if he shows improvement.

Second baseman Danny Espinosa, third baseman Yunel Escobar and utility infielder Cliff Pennington are all free agents after this season.
