Cavaliers to sign Derrick Williams to 10-day deal

The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to sign forward Derrick Williams to a 10-day contract, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Williams was released earlier this week by the Miami Heat. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds over 25 games for the Heat.

The Cavs have had an open roster spot for the last month. LeBron James has urged the team to sign a backup point guard. Last week the team worked out a handful of veteran guards but ultimately passed on signing any.

The Cavs have been down to just three big men because of an injury to center Chris Andersen.

The team is playing in Oklahoma City Thursday night. Coach Ty Lue indicated James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love may sit for rest. Iman Shumpert and JR Smith are also out with injury.

The Vertical first reported the signing.
