Cowboys juice special teams by signing CFL's top kick returner

The Dallas Cowboys are bracing for a transformation on their special teams by signing the CFL's top kick returner.

The team announced Tuesday they have signed wide receiver Quincy McDuffie to a reserve/future contract, Pro Football Talk reported.

McDuffie, who played collegiately at UCF and spent time with the Broncos during the 2013 offseason, led the CFL in kickoff returns with a 27.7 yard-per-return average in 2016 while playing with Winnipeg. Earlier in his CFL Betsmove career, he has produced two kickoff return touchdowns and another punt return touchdown.

Lucky Whitehead handled kick returns for the Cowboys in 2016, producing an average of 23.2 yards per kickoff return and 7.8 yards per punt return. The Cowboys did not have a kickoff or punt return of longer than 40 yards during their 13-3 season in 2016.

The Cowboys apparently also are preparing for the possible departure of either Brice Butler or Terrance Williams to free agency with the signing of former Texas A&M and Houston Texans receiver and kick returner Uzoma Nwachukwu.

The Allen native was an undrafted free agent out of A&M in 2013. He also spent time on the Dolphins' and Seahawks' practice squad, although he has never appeared in and NFL game or made a 53-man roster.

Nwachukwu could merely be fodder for training camp practices. But the possible departure of either Butler and Williams or both could result in an roster spot opening for somebody in training camp.
