The Jets are going to take a look at a cornerback who potentially could help their sagging secondary.

K’Waun Williams, a local product from Paterson, NJ, is visiting with the Lions on Monday and then will move on to meet with the Jets, according to NFL Network.

Williams, 25, did not play in 2016 and thus is eligible to sign with a team immediately, well before the free agency period begins March 9.

Williams, undrafted out of Pittsburgh, was the starting nickel back for the Browns in 2014 and 2015, playing in 26 games, mostly working out of the slot. He was out of football last season after a messy split with the Browns, who released him last summer. According to Cleveland.com, Williams refused to play in the preseason opener against the Packers because of an ankle injury and then threatened to retire. The Browns contend Williams said he did not want to play in the game and threatened to retire, not mentioning the ankle injury until the next day. The Browns slapped Williams with a two-week suspension and then released him.

The Bears were awarded Williams off waivers, but he failed their physical because of bone spurs in his ankle. He subsequently had surgery and missed the entire season. Williams is a product of St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, NJ.

The Jets could be facing changes in their defensive backfield, beginning with the uncertain status of faded star corner Darrelle Revis. Buster Skrine, if he returns, is best suited for the slot corner role. Marcus Williams is set to become a restricted free agent.
