With several coaches leaving since the end of the season, Texas State coach Everett Withers has announced a framework on how he will retool his staff for his second season coaching the Bobcats that will include a staff departure and a dismissal of a Bobcat assistant.
"With the completion of the 2017 signing day, it is always a time to reflect and try to improve your football program," Withers said. "One way is through staff changes and realignment. When you hire great coaches, you must understand that coaches will have opportunities to expand their career and move on."
Withers announced that veteran safeties coach Troy Douglas was not retained, with Preston Mayes and Withers now sharing the coaching duties at the position.
Douglas, who had been a college assistant for 27 season, came to the Bobcats after serving as the secondary coach at Sam Houston over the spring after serving as a quality control coach at Florida State during the 2015 season. Previously, he had been an assistant at Pittsburgh, Iowa State, North Carolina, South Florida, Indiana, South Carolina State, Michigan State, SMU, UTEP, East Tennessee State and West Chester.
Former offensive coordinator Brett Elliott has left the staff to take a job as quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State. Elliott previously was a member of Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen's staff from 2012-14 as a quality control assistant.
Withers has announced that Parker Flemming, who coached wide receivers and special teams last season will become the team's new quarterback coach. Former Rutgers running backs coach Zak Kuhr will coach a similar position with the Bobcats and be the team's offensive coordinator with emphasis on the running game.
Ron Antoine will switch from coaching running backs and tight ends to receivers. Offensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Adrian Mayes will move to tight ends.
The Bobcats finished 2-10 in Withers' first season, losing their final six games.
Withers will start his second spring practice on March 22 with the annual Maroon-Gold spring Game on April 15.
The Bobcats will kick off the 2017 season on Sept. 2, when the Houston Baptist visits.
