Gov. Greg Abbott, a frequent tweeter, made a quip at the National Football League's treatment of Tom Brady  after CBS reported the agency might avoid the Lone Star State if the so-called "bathroom bill" becomes law.

"If a proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law there, that would certainly be a factor considered when thinking about awarding future events, said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy in an email to CBS.

Senate Bill 6, championed by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and a number of other lawmakers, would require Texans to use the bathroom that matches the sex on their birth certificate. It would bar transgender Texans from using the bathroom that coincides with their gender identity.

"NFL decision makers also benched Tom Brady last season. It ended with NFL handing the Super Bowl trophy to Brady," Abbott said in response to the CBS article.

In North Carolina, a similar law caused the NCAA to removed seven events from the state in 2016, the New York Times reported in September. Patrick lauded Abbott's response, saying: "Don't mess with Texas" on his Facebook page.
