The chief of the Conservatives in the EU parliament feared warping, Catalonia should split. The separatists probably hesitate with the proclamation of independence.

Catalonia: Weber warns of the return of the euro crisis

The Chairman of EPP Group in European Parliament, Manfred Weber (CSU), warns of independence of Catalonia against a return to euro crisis. A political debate about Catalonia could "become a European conflagration", Weber told Bild newspaper.

Weber demanded that Spanish central government in Madrid and regional government of Catalonia should negotiate immediately on basis of Spanish laws. This will require more pressure from outside to Catalan regional government. The central government is rejecting talks with region on defusing of crisis, as long as planned proclamation of independence has not been denied.

The head of regional government, Carles Puigdemont, announced a speech to parliament in Barcelona for Tuesday. Wher he will call independence is unclear. A plenary session of regional parliament, scheduled for Monday, was cancelled again according to a spokeswoman for party Cup. It was originally expected that independence of Catalonia should be proclaimed at meeting. The spokeswoman pointed out that Spanish Constitutional Court had banned parliamentary session.

The regional government in Barcelona held a referendum last Sunday on independence of economically strong norast Spanish region, although Supreme Court had banned it. According to information from Barcelona, about 90 percent of participants voted for a detachment from Spain. The majority of opponents had not been involved in order not to legitimize referendum.
