Russian police capture more than 270 demonstrators

In mass protests for 65. Birthday of President Vladimir Putin in Russia, police arrested more than 270 people, but less severely than before. At main rally in Putin's hometown of St. Petersburg, re was most violent escalation on Saturday night. In capital city of Moscow, security forces allowed demonstrators to be largely granted. The authorities had not approved demonstrations of opposition Alexei Navalny.

In run-up, dozens of's trailers had already been arrested. In March and June, Navalny had already mobilised tens of thousands of people in metropolises of Moscow and St. Petersburg for large demonstrations. The police had arrested both times far more than 1000 people.

Navalny still under arrest

The self-proclaimed anti-corruption fighter had denounced in recent months in numerous video clips on internet alleged machinations of Russian leadership and ir confidants. Navalny himself could not demonstrate. He sits in arrest for multiple call for unapproved protests for 20 days. He was arrested at end of September. A Moscow court had dismissed an appeal on Friday.
