Political commitment: Bundestag election drives party members

AfD-Ascent, Brexit-vote, Trump-victory: These events motivate many people to engage in parties. There were particularly many applications for admission after the election.

Political commitment: Bundestag election drives party members

The Brexit, election of US President and strength of AfD are most commonly mentioned reasons for entering a party. A survey of time online in party headquarters shows that even after Bundestag election, more people than orwise received requests for admission. Thus, with 443,000 members, largest party in Germany, SPD, after election on 24 September, recorded 4,157 online tickets within two weeks. This is comparatively much: from beginning of year to end of September, according to party headquarters, 25,000 people resigned, so in monthly cut nearly 2,800.

The CDU also speaks of an "increase in online applications for election", but does not want to quantify this because entrances in local associations have been made and have not yet been recorded centrally. From beginning of year until end of August, CDU entered information according to 9,905 people. This is much less than SPD, with roughly same total number of members.

There were 1,816 people in left with ir currently nearly 62,000 members since election. Since beginning of year a net increase of 2,634 members has been created – in contrast to SPD and CDU, exits and deaths are already taken into account.

The FDP with its 63,000 members counted in week around Bundestag election around 2,000 receiving applications. This is a quarter of 8,000 tickets that have been in effect since beginning of year. The number of online requests for admission from 2017 already exceeds value of entire record year 2009, party said.

The Greens also speak of "disproportionately many" entrances – since election was just under 1,600, about 1,800 ors would have expressed interest. For comparison: In first quarter of 2017, about 500 people entered. With more than 62,000 members, Greens are about same size as left and FDP.

Even AfD with ir currently about 28,000 members is growing, albeit for or reasons: Since election, nearly 900 people have requested admission, said a spokesman. This is up in member curve "a small peak". The main motive is party's prospect of participation in Bundestag. In same period, however, 300 people were withdrawn. Wher this value is above average and related to exit of former party chief Frauke Petry, spokesman could not say.

Online application does not mean recording

The entry of parties does not correspond to net increase in number of members, because deaths and withdrawals are not yet taken into account by most parties. Also, an entry via online form does not automatically imply a recording in party, as processing and trial times have to be taken into account. This applies to all parties, especially Greens and AfD.

The Parties present in Bundestag benefit from political developments of past months and years: "The serious right-wing in German Bundestag is causing many people concern and proposes to us in an above-average number A party spokeswoman for Greens. The Greens would "raise voices more resolutely".

The SPD registered " first entrance waves" after Brexit decision 2016 in United Kingdom and election of Donald Trumps to US president. "On night of election in US, we had ten times as many online tickets as usual," said a spokesman. Many newcomers also called emerging nationalism as motive. So " advent of AfD" has persuaded many people to enter. A large entry wave had been given to Chancellor candidate after nomination of Martin Schulz.

The left also sees several factors: on one hand, "many young people in Germany" insist on desire for a more equitable society. In addition, left also benefited from entry of AfD into Bundestag, said a spokeswoman.

A furr development is also indicative of a greater interest in political participation: Bundestag election and recent Landtag elections have also increased turnout again.
