The European consumer organization BEUC and 18 of its members, including the Association of Financial Users (Asufin) and the Federation of Consumers and Users (CECU), have presented this Thursday a complaint against Meta before the network of authorities of consumer protection (CPC) for its "multiple unfair commercial practices."

BEUC, according to information released by Spanish associations, is also evaluating whether Meta is violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The CECU and Asufin have recalled that, currently, Meta is implementing changes to its service within the European Union (EU), "requiring that Facebook and Instagram users give their consent to the processing of their data for advertising purposes or pay for not to be shown ads.

In this sense, both have considered that it would be an "unfair" choice for users, "which in several aspects would go against EU consumer legislation and which, therefore, must be stopped."

The deputy director general of the European consumer organization BEUC, Ursula Pachl, has highlighted that the choice that the technology giant currently offers consumers is "unfair and illegal."

For the president of Asufin, Patricia Suárez, this issue is "critical", to the extent that we are talking about companies "with great potential to take positions as providers of products and services."

For his part, the director of CECU, David Sánchez, has asked that "the authorities apply the law and protect users against this type of practices."
