Clifton: We're a 'safe zone' for undocumented students

CLIFTON -- Clifton school officials formally stated that they would continue to educate students in their district regardless of their immigration status, reported NorthJersey.com.

School board officials passed a resolution stating that the district was not serving as a law enforcement agency, but that it wanted to reaffirm that it would educate all school-age children living in the district, according to the report.

"The Board has taken note of recent political rhetoric targeting undocumented residents and various immigrant and religious populations in our country," according to the resolution. "The Board desires to assure all Clifton residents of the district's commitment to educating all school-age children who live in the district, as required by law."

The school policy, school officials told the publication, was in keeping with a Supreme Court decision that ruled all public schools must educate non-citizen children.

The school's policy comes after President Trump's executive action that banned people from seven countries from coming to the United States. In response to the executive action, protests have sprung up throughout the state.

In Passaic County, two protests, one during the week and one on Sunday, attracted large groups to protest the ban.

On Monday, the state Senate passed a resolution calling for school districts and colleges to be "safe zones" for undocumented families and would protect their information.
