Construction worker finds body in mud along suburban roadway

A construction worker discovered a body along the side of a road in Lake in the Hills, police said Tuesday.

Local authorities said the discovery was made in a muddy area along Illinois Highway 31 near Rakow Road in the far northwest suburb and reported to police shortly after 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Lake in the Hills police said the body belonged to an adult but have not indicated whether it was a man or woman. Police department spokeswoman Amanda Schmitt said authorities were working to identify the remains and notify next of kin.

Schmitt said there is no indication of any threat to public safety.

The investigation is being conducted by local police, the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team and the coroner's office.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
