Ribera criticizes the lack of transparency in the energy sector and calls for an "open books" policy

MADRID, 27 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Vice President of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has criticized the lack of transparency in the energy sector in various aspects such as information on the configuration of prices in the cost of energy, calling for an "open books" policy for the industry.

"We need a lot more transparency in the energy sector," he has sentenced in the corridors of Congress. "The energy sector, like the financial sector was at the time, has not been completely transparent," Ribera criticized.

The vice-president has alluded, among other aspects, to the estimation of the cost of energy, which is not necessarily the same as the price at which they sell energy, or how energy is generated in a company and sold to a trading company of the same group.

Regarding Iberdrola's results in the third quarter, especially the 14% drop in profits in the business in Spain, Ribera has argued that the good that the company sells is electricity, an asset "hugely important "for the well-being of families and businesses.

For this reason, he considers it "reasonable" that "at a time when the profits of these companies are skyrocketing, there are government measures that seek to reduce those profits and make it easier for families and industry to bear the cost."

Regarding the announcement by the president of the company, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, to launch a battle in court against the tax on these companies, Ribera has indicated that the businessman "has his right to present the resources he wants with respect to any measure to be adopted in this country".

On the other hand, the vice president has also reviewed the problems that households are having when processing the change to a regulated rate of last resort (TUR). Ribera has recognized that the energy companies "are collapsed", although she believes that the solution is "very easy": it involves reinforcing the teams to be able to serve a greater number of people.

In this sense, he has expressed his "thanks" to the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) for opening an information file against the marketers, since he considers it "logical" that "when the Government mobilizes to facilitate a tariff regulated under conditions" and at "a reasonable cost", these companies "can quickly speed up this process".
