VIA Rail could be forced to suspend its services as of next Monday since the union representing some 2,400 employees filed a 72-hour strike notice on Thursday.

Travelers will have to deal with possible service problems if no agreement is reached by then between the two parties for the renewal of collective agreements.

“VIA Rail has made every effort to reach an agreement with Unifor. We are continuing our discussions with the union and remain committed to negotiating a fair and reasonable agreement,” said Martin R Landry, President and Chief Executive Officer, in a press release.

“Unfortunately, if no agreement is reached, VIA Rail will be forced to suspend all services for the duration of the strike and until normal operations can safely resume. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our passengers,” he added.

This strike comes at a time when all VIA Rail services were back to normal, it was specified.

Passengers can change their reservation free of charge or opt for a full refund of tickets that have not been used.
