For a year we have tried to save ourselves as a climate savior. We, se are mor, far and two children who live a classic, slightly green flavored middle class life: House with garden, two rabbits, a car, four bicycles, a wheel trailer which and four garbage cans outside door to order bio-waste, plastic, paper and rest neatly to separate. We thought we were among good ones, at least halfway – until day our daughter filled a climate calculator. Because he clearly demonstrated to us that too much CO2 is released through our way of life. Far too much to be honest.

So we looked at what goes: how much CO2 can we save, and that without getting out of our lives? That, in turn, we told our friends, acquaintances and colleagues. And thus came to wonderful world of green self-deceit.

    "What is your climate balance?"

    "My what...?"

"Well, do you know how much CO2 you are responsible for in year, by your way of life?"

"Nope... Not so accurate... Probably for too much... Already because of flying. "

Nobody today still denies climate change, at least not in our enlightened acquaintances. No one is questioning that north, so we, must change something – so that global temperature does not continue to rise, with uncontrollable consequences. And everyone thinks that politicians should tackle problem much more quickly and dauntlessly. It is only when it comes to its own behaviour that matter suddenly becomes delicate.

Four for climate four for climate

How do we reduce our ecological footprint? The question, after right, cheerful but environmentally conscious life in times of climate change employs many. Petra Pinzler, Günr Wessel and her children have tried it for a year and wrote down ir experiences – in book "Four for climate-how our family tries to live CO2 neutrally". This text is based on book. It was published at Droemer-Knaur, in March 2018.

"Now you also start with bad conscience Ökonummer! Does my flights count, do little people stranglehold and forget great environmental sinners? " One evening at wine, a good friend responds as we ask him about his climate balance and n tell us about our self-experiment. His reaction becomes even more fierce: paradise on earth cannot be found anyway. Certainly not through all green fuss, Fair trade Ökoscheiß and self-righteous World rescue. Then he still says, "Sin happily and with pleasure. And fights against really bad guys. " and lifts his glass.

We get similar reactions in weeks afterwards in variants. Sometimes with a binding sigh, sometimes annoyed we are accused of mutating to fun braking. To people with whom one can no longer talk about spontaneous flights to Lisbon (a bargain with cheap fliers) or about chic clos, not to mention long-distance travel. Who have a wonderfully fragrant Argentinian beef steak and n lecture over its LCA, instead of simply enjoying it. In short: to nerve saws, or as children would say: not cool.

We could have changed circle of friends, or we could only meet with those who reacted thoughtfully. After all, y were also: many acquaintances who admit that y too are often helpless and with a latent conscience standing in front of shelves of supermarkets and swinging back and forth between organic and regional and Fairtradeprodukten. Who drive to shopping, but n almost as a relief to Biomatis grab. Which makes flying a stupid feeling, but n sometimes y strike. If it's going to Ans for 25 euros, just fuck bad conscience.

At some point we wanted to know: why is talking about climate protection in private as uncomfortable as foot odor for many ors? After all, se are normal, very nice people.
