First QS ranking of Europe's best universities revealed
LONDON, September 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global experts in higher education, published the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024, which evaluates universities based on global recognition, research prowess , teaching resources, internationalization and employment outcomes (methodology) and lists 688 institutions in 42 members of the Council of Europe, including 106 universities, have never before been ranked by QS.
Topping the list is the University of Oxford, followed by ETH Zurich and the University of Cambridge. The United Kingdom dominates, with 107 institutions, followed by Turkey and Germany with 73 and 53, respectively. Regional highlights:
Austria: Celebrates the third highest proportion of international teachers.
Belgium: Stands out for its research collaboration, ranking third at the regional level.
Czech Republic and Poland: The only Eastern European countries showing the top 100 placements at Charles University and the University of Warsaw.
Denmark and Sweden: Achieve first and second position in Sustainability, respectively.
Finland: Reaches fourth place in research partnerships.
France: Affirms regional leadership in research, with four universities among the European elite for international collaboration.
Germany: A research powerhouse with numerous institutions dominating the regional top 10 and top 50 in terms of research output.
Italy: Research stands out, ranking third in academic contributions per teacher, with 25 institutions among the 100 best for this indicator.
Lithuania: Third regionally in attracting international exchange students.
Netherlands: Distinguished for its academic and business reputation, with almost half of its institutions in the top 100.
Norway and Ireland: Achieve third and fourth place respectively in Sustainability.
Portugal: Achieves its highest result in Sustainability, ranking seventh at the regional level.
Slovenia: Leads in Employment Outcomes, reflecting the standing of its graduates among employers.
Spain: Leads in student mobility, highlighted by IE University's rich and diverse student composition.
Switzerland: Balances research excellence and academic diversity, excelling in research citations and international teaching representation.
Türkiye: Room to scale. Despite its strong university count (73), none of its universities are among the top 100.
